Pruning in Company

It's rose pruning season here, and luckily, the last few days have been warm and sunny.

A barberry branch
None of my perennials has been cut back yet (and a few are still blooming), and the roses have grown tall and still have most of their leaves and even a few buds. Working on plant after plant in the warm sunshine, I have discovered quite a few little creatures that keep me company in my winter cleanup.

A bumblebee on an arbutus unedo

Someone has been eating my roses...

Katydids leave holes in rose buds. Sometimes entire leaflets are eaten too.

...and someone else my daisies :(

There is still nectar in my strawberry tree's flowers.

And amazing views can be enjoyed from the vantage point of a rugosa leaf.

I am never alone in the garden.

  3. Masha, wonderful pictures of your neighbors in the garden. You're working in warm sunshine and I am in cold shoveling snow off the paths. I love the first photo!

  4. WOW, your photography is stunning. There is so much to see if we only take a moment to get a little closer.

  5. These photos are just incredible. I have never seen any so close up, and the subjects are wonderful. I love how the pattern on the katydid is similar to the pattern on the leaf. And I love how the bee is sucking the juice out of your strawberry tree's tiny blooms. But my favorite is the spider. He is not only surveying the scene, but I think he is watching your every move! I like to think of my garden time as alone time, but now i know - there's something always watching!

  10. Hi Masha, great shots of the little critters joining you in the garden while you are pruning your roses. I intended to start with the rose pruning this weekend, but there is lots of rain in the forecast. But it is OK to have to postpone the pruning for getting tons of rain in exchange :-)!
